Åre, the Swedish Alps

Åre is Sweden’s largest and most famous ski resort but is also a popular destination during the summer. The cozy village which is constantly under development has proximity to many excursion destinations and there are also spa facilities for those who want to relax. During the winter season, Åre offers wonderful skiing on both cross-country and downhill and in the summer, there is a wide range of hiking and biking trails.

Minus degrees in the air

Åre is best known for its fantastic skiing and here is something to suit the whole family. The lift system is large, and you will easily be able to spend the day here from the lifts opening until they close. For those in need there are ski schools for all levels and many restaurants or barbecue places for when the legs need a little rest and the stomach is grumbling. When the lifts closes, it’s time to carry on to the after-ski where you can sing along to old goodies and dance on the tables until the sweat shines.

After a few days on the slopes it can be nice to find something else. Why not make an excursion to Tännforsen, which is Sweden’s largest waterfall, take a trip to go cross-country skiing in Ullådalen or just relax and treat yourself to a spa day, you will be worth it!

Mountain biking and lovely hikes

Although the biggest tourist season in Åre is in the winter, many activity-minded people come here to experience the magical nature of the Jämtland mountains even when the snow has melted. For those of you who are adrenaline junkies, don’t miss out on downhill biking down the Åreskutan. There are 35 trails that, in varying degrees of difficulty, take you from the top of Åreskutan down to Åre village, where there are lifts that take you up again. For those who want to take the bike at a slightly more comfortable pace, there are also many mountain bike trails that takes you via trails and cross over the barren mountains and through the green forests. Down in the village there are many shops that sell and rent all kinds of bicycle equipment, so for those who want to pack easily before your trip or want to try it, you can get everything in place.

Despite the many bike trails available, the hiking trails are probably double the number (if not more). Hike or run among blueberries and streams, up on peaks or through forests. Either way, you will always be able to admire cool views and stunning scenery.
