Kunstareal

Munich is full of attractions, historic sites and there are many interesting museums to visit. In the Kunstareal area, many of the city’s museums are collected, such as the Museum Reich der Kristalle, which has a cool collection of meteorites from, for example, Mars and the moon. There is also a geological museum, many art museums such as Neue Pinakothek with over 400 paintings and sculptures from the 20th century. There is also a Glyptotek and a university for art, music and film studies as well as over ten different cultural institutions. One of many interesting and beautiful buildings in Munich is the new town hall on Marienplatz, it was built in the early 1900s and is a sleek neo-Gothic building. In the same square is the old town hall from the 1300s, a white fine building, much smaller than the new one. Another cool museum is the engineering museum Deutsche Museum where you can see Germany’s oldest organ, the Wright brothers first aircraft, steam locomotives and much more.

There are a lot of options for those who like shopping, you will find most of it in the form of markets, the big chain stores and odd shops. At Hofflohmarkt, the neighborhood’s courtyards are filled with everything between heaven and earth. At Viktualienmarkt, which is near Marienplatz, there is a market where you will find good cheeses, fruits, herbs, spices, bread and wine. For some more original stores and interesting designs, take a look at Gärtnerplatz and Glockenbach.

Festivals and hanging out in parks

If you love beer and festivals, then Oktoberfest in Munich is perfect for you! At the end of September, Oktoberfest is organized and there you can drink good beer and eat food, but you can also bring your own food provided you order a beer or two! During the summer you can go to Summer Tollwood with lots of music, shows and markets.

When you need to take a break from everything that the big city has to offer, you can find the English garden where you can take it easy, breathe out, drink coffee and swim in the river Isar. Or take the Olympia Park, which was built in 1972 before the Olympics, where there is also the 190 meter Olympic tower which gives you a great view of the city. In the tower you will also find a restaurant and a museum dedicated to pop and rock music.
