“Watching the tulips in the Netherlands” might not be on your bucket list, but we assure you that you definitely would miss something if you would not visit the Keukenhof flower garden in Lisse. They are open from the 21st of March to the 10th of May ever year and it is during this period the 7 million tulips, in all different colours and shapes blossoms. The garden often arranges art exhibitions and other exciting events and the town of Lisse is only a short train trip away from Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The Netherlands is also famous for the many windmills placed all around the country. In Kinderdijk, just outside Rotterdam you will find 19 windmills, and you can also pay a small fee to go inside in one of them and here the fascinating story behind the windmills. If you are looking for adventures, you can take the train to the beautiful Biesbosch National Park where you can go for long hikes, ride horses or go kayaking.
Two well-known cities that are worth a visit are Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Both cities are easily accessible with train and if you want to explore the cities it is best to rent a bike to do that. Both of the cities are very bicycle-friendly, especially Amsterdam with the canals making it hard for cars to reach the narrow streets. Here in Amsterdam you will find adorable, colourful houses, medieval churches and many museums. If you are having a hard time choosing which museums to visit, we would recommend Anne Frank’s secret annex, the Rembrandt house museum and the Rijkmuseum. When you are in the feeling for some good shopping you can take your bike to De 9 Straatjes where you will find cool second-hand clothes and jewellery along with other exciting things.
In Rotterdam you cannot miss DakAkker, which is a 1000m2 roof garden with fruits, vegetables and herbs that supplies many of the city’s cafes and restaurants. By the garden there is a small café by the name Op het dak Rotterdam. If you visit the old train station Hofplein, you will find designer shops and Bird, which is a popular jazz club. The Park is also a nice place in Rotterdam, as you may suspect it is a big park where you can hide from the hectic city for a while. The park is a perfect place for a picnic with the green grass and trees and you will also find an old stable which has been turned into a small café. In the summer the outdoor seating is filled sun chairs and during autumn they have a nice, warming fire.
