Destinations

Davos in Switzerland is best known for its snow-covered slopes during the winter season, but do not hesitate to go here in the summer as well. Here you will be met by magnificent scenery, as well as there is both shopping accessible and bars close at hand. Whether you are an experienced hiker or a beginner, there are options for everyone here in Davos. The Thomas Mann Trail is a fairly easy route that most people can handle. The trail starts at the Waldhotel in Davos and with a 2.8 km hike you reach the Thomas-Mann-Platz at Schatzalp. Along the trail there are several paintings that enlighten you on Thomas Mann’s work and his connection to Davos.

For those who want a little longer trip you can walk the panoramic route from Lenzerheide to Davos. This hike takes two days and takes you through stunning views through the Schanfigg Valley. The hike starts in Lenzerheide with the sparkling Heidsee lake and then takes you to the cozy village of Arosa. If you want to take a day trip instead, it is also possible to start the hike here as well. From Arosa, the hike to Davos takes about eight hours.

Zermatt is located at the foot of the highest mountains in the entire Alpine region. Here Matterhorn (the “Toblerone Mountain”), Weisshorn and Monte Rosa ascend to the sky and standing down in Zermatt suddenly feels quite small. Up in the Valais Alps is this snug alpine village that you will fall in love with at first sight. Here you should definitely try the Swiss cheese or chocolate and why not take the opportunity to eat at one of the cozy restaurants located in the middle of the mountains that serves the best fondue.

The Five Lakes Walk (5-Seenweg) is in a class of its own when it comes to hiking in Zermatt. The trail starts from the top of the Blauherd cable car station and takes you through five different lakes, each lake with its own color and character. The trip takes about three hours and extends for about six kilometres. When you arrive at the last lake; Leisee you can take the opportunity to cool off with a dip in the fresh water. The trail offers fantastic views of snow-covered mountain peaks and lush landscapes.

The trail that you should have walked at least once in your life, at least according to the villagers in Zermatt, is the hike up to the Hörnli Hut/Hörnlihütte. The trail starts on the Schwarzsee, easily accessible by cable car, but if you prefer a longer trip you can also hike up here. From here you have a rather advanced walk in front of you up to the Hörnli Hut, but once you are up there you can take a breather with some food in your stomach. In front of you you will have the top of the Matterhorn, if you look closely you can probably get a glimpse of one or two climbers who will dare take on the steep climb. Up here you really are in the middle of the rocky mountains. An experience that not everyone gets to encounter.

Bad Gastein. Surrounded by the beautiful Alps, you will find the people’s favourite retreat of Bad Gastein. This is a paradise for active people as there is everything from hiking, cycling and horse riding found here. After a day of activities and experiences, there is also a large selection of top-class spa and relaxation centers. Bad Gastein is located in the Gastein Valley, which also consists of Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein, from high peaks to deep valleys you can experience some of the best that the Alps have to offer.

When it comes to hiking there are many people who start by taking the cable car up to the top station on Stubnerkogel, from here most of the trails take you up on one of the peaks that can be seen all around you. Up at the top station there is also a 140 metre long suspension bridge that many tourists use to take beautiful pictures.

One of the peaks that you can access from here by hiking is Tischkogel, it is a somewhat challenging hike but it offers some fantastic views. The trip from Stubnerkogel takes about 1.5 hours and for those who want a little longer trip you can also hop off the cable car at the intermediate station and then walk up to the top station and then continue

Another place in the Gastein Valley is Schlossalm where there are activities suitable for the whole family. Playgrounds, parkour courses and climbing paths can be found here. To get here, take the cable car from the village of Bad Hofgastein, which is about a ten minute drive from Bad Gastein. In Schlossalm there is hiking fitting for everyone, most of the hikes go around the soothing mountain lake and among lush meadows. Surely nothing you would want to miss!

Hallstatt has become one of Austria’s most visited places, with its fine houses facing the shiny lake, even for its mines that many visit when they come here. A piece of advice is to stay in either Obertraun or Bad Goisern as Hallstatt can be very expensive to live in. When it comes to hiking there are plenty of trails just around the salt lake that Hallstatt is located at. One of the trails goes from Hallstatt up to the mighty Waldbach waterfall and takes about two hours. The hike begins inside the village and leads you through cozy paths through Echern Valley’s green meadows and forests.

After a while it gets a little steeper and the lungs get to work, now you will also be able to see the whole valley with the small picturesque village down there as well as the bright blue lake. After a little bit of hiking, you have reached the surging waterfall. Here you can settle down among the green meadows and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

If you follow trail 601 from Hallstatt, past the Tiergarten Hut and the Wiesberghaus you will reach a well-prepared trail up to the Simony Hut (Simonyhütte). Up here, the snow remains on the glaciers all year round and you get a breathtaking view of the entire Daschstein Plateau. Usually more adept hikers trek up here since it can be quite steep and rocky. From here you can also take a trip to the Dachstein Glacier which is said to be a visit beyond the ordinary.

Below, you will find our best tips on planning your journey to be as comfortable as possible, with fewer changes and good layover times. If you are searching for a journey yourself, the website might produce an alternative that it considers the best. But sometimes, it is more favorable for you to divide the trip. For example, look up ‘Stockholm – Copenhagen’ in one search, then Copenhagen – Hamburg in the next instead of ‘Stockholm – Hamburg’ at once.
